Because perfection was never the point

I need to tell you something that took me way too long to figure out: you do not have to be perfect at this. Not even close.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve gone down the rabbit hole. You started reading labels. Then you learned about seed oils. Then pesticides. Then what’s really in your tap water. And suddenly you’re standing in the grocery store feeling like nothing is safe, nothing is clean enough, and you’re failing your family no matter how hard you try.

I’ve been there. That overwhelming, anxious feeling where every meal feels like a test you’re not passing. And here’s what I learned the hard way — that mindset? It’s just as toxic as the stuff you’re trying to avoid.

So I stopped chasing perfection. And I started living by the 80/20 rule instead. It changed everything.

So What’s the 80/20 Rule?

It’s simple. About 80% of the time, we eat and live as clean as we possibly can. At home, that means organic produce, grass-fed beef, pasture-raised eggs, clean ingredients, no junk. We know what’s going into our food because we’re the ones making it.

The other 20%? That’s real life. That’s eating out with friends and ordering the gluten-free option even though you know the kitchen probably cooked it in seed oils. That’s the vacation where you do the best you can with what’s available and don’t beat yourself up about it.

Because here’s the reality — unless you live on a farm, grow all your own food, raise your own animals, and never leave your property, perfection is not achievable in the modern world. It’s just not. And most of us don’t live that way. We live in a world full of convenience food, restaurant meals, school events, and social situations that are never going to be 100% clean.

And that is okay.

What 80/20 Actually Looks Like in Our House

I’m not going to give you a vague “just do your best” and leave it at that. Here’s what this practically looks like for our family:

The One Exception: When 100% Matters

I want to be upfront about this because I don’t want anyone to misunderstand my message. There are situations where 80/20 doesn’t apply, and you need to be strict.

If you or your child are on a healing protocol like the GAPS diet, 100% compliance matters. That’s not about being obsessive — that’s about healing the gut, and the protocol only works when you follow it fully. One cheat doesn’t just slow you down; it can set you back significantly. When you’re healing, the rules are different, and you need to honor that.

But for everyday living? For the family that’s just trying to eat better, reduce their toxic load, and raise healthy kids in a world that makes it ridiculously hard? The 80/20 rule is your sanity saver.

Why Perfection Actually Backfires

Here’s what I’ve seen happen over and over — in my own life and in the lives of other mamas I talk to. You go all in. You overhaul everything overnight. You stress about every single ingredient, every product, every meal. And then you burn out. You feel like you can’t keep up. And instead of doing something, you do nothing, because it feels like if you can’t do it perfectly, why bother?

That’s the trap. Perfection isn’t the goal — it’s the thing that stops you from making any progress at all.

The mom who swaps out her canola oil for avocado oil this month, switches to a cleaner laundry detergent next month, and starts buying organic milk the month after that? She’s going to be in a completely different place a year from now. And she’s going to get there without the anxiety, the guilt, or the burnout.

Small steps over time create real change. I will say that until I’m blue in the face because it’s the truth.

Give Yourself Grace

If you’re reading this and you’re in that overwhelmed phase — where you feel like you’re not doing enough, not clean enough, not good enough — I want you to hear me: you’re already doing more than most people by caring in the first place.

You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to keep going. One swap at a time. One better choice at a time. That’s it.

Control what you can at home. Make the best choice available when you’re out. And stop punishing yourself for the 20% that isn’t perfect. Your body is resilient. Your kids are resilient. And you’re building a foundation that matters way more than any single meal or any single product.

Progress over perfection. Every single time.
